Sela Trek : Overview

In the Eastern Himalayas, just east of Bhutan and bordering China in its northern end is the Tawang region. Westernmost district of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, this is one of the most rewarding places for a combination of trekking and driving through high mountains. For most part controlled by the Indian army, one negotiates through snow covered tracks the high ridges and troughs, with sometimes only moss and algae for vegetation as most part of this area is above the timber line. You can have glimpses of the Bhutan Himalayas in the west and craggy peaks of the eastern Himalayas.

The trek starts at the Sela Pass at 14000 ft. after being driven up from the plains of Assam. This is one of the highest mountain passes in India.

On a clear day one can see at a distance the Tawang Monastery, perched on a hill top, after coming down only a little way from the pass. It is a very interesting sight as the Monastery grows a little larger with each passing curve on the road that affords a look to the west through a misty and vast valley. As we come down further and before taking the final turn towards the road head, you are awe struck with the beauty of the Nuranang Falls, a great sheet of water cascading down a cliff throwing sprays of water at your body if you are close enough.
