Patkai Hill Tribes : Overview

From the easternmost tip of the Eastern Himalayas, a low range of hills bends sharply southwards and gets lower as it melts into the Assam plains. This is the Patkai Hills and is home to some of the most interior tribes. Long cut off from the mainstream, these tribes had only occasional contacts with the outside world. We are talking about the Nocte and Wanchoo tribes of the Tirap district in Arunachal Pradesh and the Konyak tribe of northern Nagaland who have striking similarities with their northern Wanchoo brothers.

As we make our way towards the Patkai Hills through the green tea estates of Assam, there is a feeling of anticipation and excitement for we are entering an area not visited by many. Wakka village of the Wanchoos, with thatch houses perched on a hill slope, has been described by an Italian tour operator as the best tribal village she ever visited in terms of tradition and lifestyle of the people.

Tattooed faces greet you as you drive your way up the road to Mon, the land of the Konyaks. Visit villages where there had been fierce fighting amongst the different tribal villages, often leading to head hunting. The human heads taken as trophies were used to be displayed by the victorious tribes during their festivals.
