The Kanchanjunga Biosphere Trek : Sample Itinerary

KOLKATA - BAGDOGRA/ NJP - YOKSUM - BAKHIM - DZONGRI - THANGSING - CHEMATHANG - GOECHALA - GANGTOK - KOLKATA
(15 NIGHTS/ 16 DAYS)
Fixed Departure Dates 2010:

Day 01: KOLKATA
Arrive Kolkata. Transferred to Hotel. Overnight.

Day 02: KOLKATA
At Kolkata with half day sightseeing. Rest of the free. Overnight.

Day 03: KOLKATA - BAGDOGRA - YOKSUM
Morning fly to Bagogra.On arrival drive to Yoksum (5800 ft/ 6 hrs). Overnight at Yoksum.

Day 04: YOKSUM
Full day at Yoksum for acclimatization.

Day 05: YOKSUM - BAKHIM (2,750m or 9,000 ft)
It takes six hours before the Bakhim forest bungalow is reached for the night.

Day 06: BAKHIM - DZONGRI (4,550m or 13,221 ft)
Trek to Dzongri leads to the world of the famed Kanchenjunga massive. Camp in tents or yak huts.

Day 07: DZONGRI - THANGSING (3,930m or 12,467 ft)
Trek to Thangsing, the 4 hours' trek leads through meadows and valleys down the burrows leads into the most beautiful valley of all situated at the base Jopunu peak.

Day 08: THANGSING - CHEMATHANG (4,800m or 15,748 ft)
Situated at the base of mighty Pandim, Chemathang is 8-km from Thangsing and takes 6 hours to trek.

Day 09: CHEMATHANG - GOECHA LA (4,940m) - CHEMATHANG
Still higher and steeper, is the Goecha (also spelt as Guicha) pass. This is the northernmost and highest point of the trek.

Day 10: CHEMATHANG - THANGSING
This is the return journey and is spent looking for rare high altitude birds and blue sheep roaming in the wilderness of high cliffs and snows, among the thick and low bushes.

Day 11: THANGSING - DZONGRI
Trek back uphill to Dzongri, 5 hrs.

Day 12: DZONGRI - BAKHIM
Trek back down hill to Bakhim, will take about 4 hrs.

Day 13: BAKHIM - YOKSUM
A leisurely walk of about four hours bring one back to Yoksum.

Day 14: YOKSUM - GANGTOK
Drive to Gangtok, 130 km / 5 hrs. On arrival check into hotel.

Day 15: GANGTOK - BAGDOGRA - KOLKATA
Transfer to Bagdogra airport, for onward flight to Kolkata. On arrival check into hotel.

Day 16: KOLKATA - AIRPORT
Transferred to Kolkata airport for flight to onward destination.
