High mountains,
monasteries, waterfalls and lakes
make this tour adventurous and at
the same time enlightening. You will
be driving through one of the highest
Himalayan mountain passes in the world,
the Sela Pass at 14000 ft. Tawang
with its 400 years old Buddhist Monastery
is a beacon for many Buddhist pilgrims
and also for the discerning tourist.
This mountain settlement in western
Arunachal Pradesh is the highlight
of this itinerary which has other
very interesting places like Dirang
and Bomdila. Your route takes a dramatic
turn after minutes of crossing the
state border with Assam. The topography
changes almost suddenly and you are
climbing the foothills of the Himalayas
in no time. From almost sea level
to 8000 ft is covered in 100 km, the
last 20 km is the steepest on your
way to Bomdila. Along the way you
come across water cascades, some worth
stopping over to take photographs.
Dirang is a picturesque little village
with the Dirang River flowing by at
a short distance. Enjoy the beauty
of the Nuranang falls on your way
to Tawang and also stop at curves
on the road as you are approaching
Tawang to have a long distance view
of the Tawang Monastery.
Most of these communities are from
the Mongoloid stock, but their geographical
isolation from each other has brought
amongst them certain distinctive characteristics
in language, dress and customs.
