Assam Wildlife Special : Overview

Located in the North - Eastern region of India, Assam is no doubt one of the richest places in the world when it comes to wildlife. Because of its bio-geographical location, which consists of a mixture of flood plains with Brahmaputra, one of the largest rivers in the world, flowing through the state and some hilly areas surrounded by Hill states like Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram etc., and Kingdom of Bhutan.

Assam in general forms part of a global bio-diversity "hotspot", out of which 41 listed endangered species of wildlife are found in Assam, which includes Golden Langur, Hoolock Gibbon, Pygmy Hog, Hispid Hare, White-Winged Wood duck, Tiger, Clouded Leopard, Swamp Deer, Gangetic Dolphins, etc. Moreover, during winter season, flocks of resident and migratory birds make Assam their natural habitat. Excluding Africa, there is perhaps no part of the world where such a variety of wildlife exists.

Assam wildlife special takes you to four major National parks in Assam
Manas National Park which is one of India's most magnificent National Parks lies along the Indo - Bhutan border based at the foothill of the Himalayas. it is a well known World heritage site with its unique combination of scenic beauty and rare wealth of wildlife, the rarest species of which are Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog, Golden Langur, Indian Rhinoceros, and Asiatic Buffalo.

Orang National Park is situated in the North bank of river Brahmaputra. With 60 % of the park being grassland, it as often regarded as a miniature Kaziranga.

Nameri National Park, situated at the foothills of eastern Himalayas, is often regarded as an entomologist's paradise.

The Kaziranga National Park is the home of the great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros. Kaziranga exhibits a very complex ecological balance, because of its forest, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, mellow marshes and shallow pools. Apart from the one horned Rhinoceros, Elephant, Indian bison, Swamp Deer, Samber, Hog Deer, Sloth Bear, Tiger, Leopard cat, Jungle cat, Hog badger, Capped Langur, Hollock Gibbon, Jackal, etc; a large number of migratory birds can also be seen here during the winter season.
