Assam Namdapha Birding : Overview

Straddling the easternmost corner of Arunachal Pradesh and bordering Myanmar on the east is the Namdapha National Park. Remote and accessible only in parts, this is a vast forested area with an altitudinal variation from 600 ft to 12000 ft. Rivers, lakes and open spaces intersperse this tropical biosphere where many flora and fauna have made it their home. More than 60% of the land mammals generally found in India is represented in Namdapha and it is the only place in the world where the 4 big cats - the tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and the rare and elusive snow leopard inhabit. The bird list is an impressive 400 with some only found in this area in India.

Trekking is the best way to see the bird life. Deban, at the entrance to the park, has a Forest Rest House with 3 rooms and basic facilities. From here porters, cooks, your birding guide will gear themselves up for the trek inside the park.

This itinerary also takes you to Dibru-Saikhowa Biosphere Reserve where all your birding spots are reached by a motorized country boat on the confluence of the River Dibru meeting the mighty River Brahmaputra. MORE ON DIBRU-SAIKHOWA

From here, as you travel towards Namdapha National Park in eastern Arunachal Pradesh, we come across the township of Digboi. Birding here is a wonderful experience; look out for key species such as Chestnut-backed Laughing thrush and other woodland birds such as White-cheeked Partridge, Jerdon's Baza (rare) and Grey-bellied Tesia etc.

TOUR GUIDE

Imran Ali: A true son of the soil, Imran was born in a village close to Kaziranga National Park. A chance encounter with an Australian bird watcher while he was aiming for a spotted dove with catapult changed his life. He was greatly impressed by the words of the birder and today he is not only an avid bird watcher himself but goes out of his way to do his bit to conserve wildlife and nature.

Imran has been escorting our birding and wildlife tours for some time now and is universally appreciated for his jovial nature and for his knowledge of birds and wildlife. He is very flexible and goes out of his way to meet our guests' needs. He has led important groups like Massachusetts Audubon Society, Harvard Natural History Society etc.
